The interim UFC heavyweight title battle between former title challenger Derrick Lewis and Cyril Gein led the event. The original plan was to show defending champion Francis Ngannou how he was defending his title against Lewis, but the promotion decided to continue the interim competition as the champion reportedly refused to defend him in August (although he has since won the championship. more than four months ago, arguing that he was available for his first defense in September).
The event was to be a battle for the UFC Women's Bantamweight Title between defending champion Amanda Nunez (also reigning UFC Featherweight Champion) and The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. rooster of Team Tate Julianne Peña. However, on July 29, the fight was called off due to Nunez's positive COVID-19 test. They should now be carried over to a future event.
Johnny Muñoz and Jamie Simmons were scheduled to face each other in the simplest fight at UFC 261, but the latter withdrew for unknown reasons. They were then moved to this event.
A middleweight bout between Uriah Hall and Sean Strickland is expected to take place at the event. However, the pair had been pushed back a week earlier and titled UFC on ESPN: Hall against Strickland.
The event included a women's rematch between Tesia Torres and former Invicta UFC light-heavyweight champion Angela Hill. The couples previously met at UFC 188 in June 2015, when Torres won unanimous support. The rematch was originally scheduled for December 2020 at UFC 256, but Hill tested positive for COVID-19 in the week leading up to the event and was excluded from the fight.
The event included a bantamweight fight between Miles Jones and Anderson dos Santos. The couple was scheduled to meet at UFC on ESPN: Makhachev vs Moises, but were dragged out hours before the show due to issues with the COVID-19 protocol at the Dos Santos camp.
At the weigh-in, former castor lightweight champion Manel Cape weighed 129 pounds, three pounds over the limit for a non-flyweight title fight. His middleweight fight continued and he lost 20% of his wallet to rival Oda Osborne.
