2020 Baby Boomer Oscar nominations
It turns out that 2019 was a good movie year for baby boomers. Half of the actors who received Oscar nominations in 2020, which was announced last week, are over 50 years old.
The nominees for baby boomers include my favorite Tom Hanks (63) in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Joe Pesci (76) in The Irishman, Brad Pitt (56) in Once Upon A Time. in Hollywood Jonathan. Pryce, 72, in The Two Popes, Antonio Banderas, 59 in Pain and Fame and Kathy Bates, 71, in Richard Jewell.
Add these old men like Anthony Hopkins (82), Oscar-nominated, in The Two Popes and Al Pacino (79) in The Irishman, and more than 50 actresses, Renée Zellweger (50), Judy and Laura Dern (52), in Marriage Receipt.
All appointed directors are also over 50 years old, except Todd Phillips, 49, a director of Joker. The nominees are Martin Scorsese (77) for The Irishman, Bong Joon Ho (50) for Parasite, Sam Mendes (54) for 1917 and Quentin Tarantino (56) for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.
Knives Out was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and played an older cast, which included Jame Lee Curtis (61), Don Johnson (70), Daniel Craig (51) and Christopher Plummer (90).
Cinema has often reflected society's stance towards the multitude of more than 50 people who are often mocked or ignored in real life. If Hollywood ridiculed an ethnic group or disabled person in films, people would be upset. Why do people tacitly tolerate how films make fun of older people? I still hope that Hollywood and society, in general, have not completely forgotten the value of older people with their knowledge, life experience, and vision. It can be a step in the right direction.
Of course, there is controversy over the fact that none of the directors were women this year, and there are far older men who were called into the actor categories than older women. While the average age of men nominated for the best actor and the best supporting role is 61.3 years, the average age of women nominated for best actress and best-supporting actress is 39.8 years... Older women in Hollywood were always judged tougher than older men. There seems to be more room for improvement in this regard.
The 92nd Oscars will be broadcast live on February 9, 2020, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time and 5:00 p.m. Pacific time on ABC.
