The Mandalorian Recap: S 2, E 8 - Not Your Average Ending
As another series of the Star Wars spin-off comes to an end, Grogus's fate is revealed in one episode at a great pace, and there is a grand cameo.
Hidden deep in a remote subdirectory, someone predicted exactly what would happen in this episode. But it surprised me. A quick and structured ending culminated in the biggest cameo in the series to date, when Luke Skywalker walked through a train of Darktroopers to reach Grogu and take him under his wing.
The picture of the season finale is the door closing for Luke, Grog, and a lucky R2D2, who head off into space to have fun with the Porgs. Our current hero has nothing left now. Din Djarin had every reason to put on his armor in the morning. He wants to keep his son ("He doesn't want to go with you," says Mando, trying Luke), but he can't.

A season doesn't usually end like this. You're preparing for the next adventure, letting a villain return, or some unexpected added complexity, something like that. But in a vote of confidence from show artist Jon Favreau who wrote this episode, The Mandalorian doesn't offer anything like that. There's half a promise to wage a civil war against Mandalore, a possible simulated duel with black sabers, but that's it. Everything is a little bit depressing.
When Din Djarin takes off his helmet to show his face to Grogu before they say goodbye, he looks defeated, almost distraught. Compare that to the Skywalker's updated, clean cheekbones (CGI can take years off you) and it will remind you that our hero is an ordinary man. An ordinary man with exceptional fighting skills and a strong moral code, but still. He's not a chosen one like Skywalker, Grog, or even Bo-Katan. Your job is to get chores done so others can thrive. No homework, what is it?
Anyway, it's probably a bit chinstrokey, but I wanted to do it. To move on to the next point, I need to quickly go back to the traditional recap, reminding everyone that this episode begins with a cleverly simulated space hunt that will allow Mando and a law enforcement team to destroy a space shuttle landing right in Moff Gideon's launch tube...
The mission from there is simple: the women fight their way to distraction by a ton of stormtroopers, while Mando deactivates the black soldiers and saves the boy. He believes he made the first lead when he took the robots out of an airlock, and after a brief fight with old Moff (it turns out Beskar throws against Dark Sword are a fair fight), he switches to the second free. feat. Everything is done and dusted. With ... uh ... 20 minutes before.
I loved that break in history. We're all used to the drama thinking it's resolved, but we suspect it isn't resolved. But in that quiet moment, my brain started spinning as I tried to guess what was going to happen next (and it had to be something, there was so much time). I thought Moff had a plan up his sleeve, but in reality, he was the rather ineffective villain his fight with Mando had exposed him to. Then the black soldiers reappeared and I thought it was okay. This is a fight our team will win. As the soldiers lined up and slowly walked through the bridge door, I began to reconsider my opinion.
And just like me, the X-Wing fighter arrived. What a great time. An act just as you are waiting for another part of the story to be solved. After that, there is a minute flashing of staring at the screen trying to look behind the lightsaber to see who it might be (I think the color showed that, but not definitely). Finally, a beautifully choreographed slash-a-thon.
That's how to do it. To soften the edge, the next requirement was that you watch a rejuvenated, spirited Luke struggling to sync with his dialogue. But hell, you can't have it all. Luke's aura is enough to send a strong message to our crew: You are the hero, but I am the icon. And very quickly he disappeared.
