early life

Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and raised in the borough's Bushwick neighborhood. His mom, Lillian (Laney), become a phone operator, and his father, Charles Edward Murphy (1940–1969), become a transit police officer and a novice actor and comedian.
